What struck me about this passage was how easily the natives jumped to conclusions! First Paul must be a murderer and then he must be a god! And it was a snake (always significant in Biblical stories!) that led them astray!
We're not all that different from the natives from Malta, are we? How easily we fall into the trap of condemning or worshipping people or things. And how quickly we change our position based on totally inadequate evidence. Our US presidents are some of our favorite targets. Bush is reelected in glory and goes out of office with ratings in the cellar. Clinton is a huge favorite and then Monica Lewinski comes along and he is condemned! And, of course, the Obama story is as yet unfinished. We'd be much better off remembering that our worship is for God alone. God is the One who never changes. |
