HABITAT FOR HUMANITY MISSION TEAM

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry building simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with those in need.

Saturday, October 27th we had a productive and fun work session at 244 Oneita Street. The house was a rehab project that had effectively been gutted, structurally reinforced and the walls newly studded in. It was a cool, rainy day so we were thankful to be given "inside" jobs.

Bill Rothney, Kathy Crandall and Randy Parker were set the task of framing a closet. Using a chop saw, hammers, nails, tape measure, and level, the three constructed a dandy 2' x 4.5' closet for the back bedroom.

Meanwhile, a crew was tearing out the basement stairs. Since it was an overcast day and lighting was limited, Jerry Young was given the responsibility for casting light on the demolition crew as they worked from various angles. It was essential help to the guys doing what appeared to be a fairly precarious task and a perfect job for someone recuperating from recent knee surgery. You're a trooper, Jerry!

Over in the dining room, Linda Wetherbee and Karen Parker were installing the underlayment for a future tile floor. Without prior experience, they were coached by Mike, the Habitat project manager on the finer points of subflooring. It involved careful measuring, cutting and then nailing it down. A new skill learned!

Newly built closet, basement stairs demolished without incident and floors ready for tile.a great morning's work. Thanks to volunteers with big hearts and willing hands.

We'll be scheduling our work sessions for 2008 in the next couple weeks. Consider wielding a hammer with us for a work day next year. It's a great way to earn service hours for youth (14 years and older) and a fun way to connect with fellow Congregationalists and friends. It doesn't take any special skills and everyone is warmly welcomed. Look for the 2008 dates in an upcoming Congregationalist and church bulletin.
