JUSTICE MISSION TEAM

This newly formed mission team is in process of discerning a breadth and depth of focus. Interest in forming this team was generated by members of the church who attended the JONAH covenant meeting and were inspired there to address justice issues in our community. The United Church of Christ "God is still speaking" campaign and the Living the Questions study group in the church generated additional interest in forming this team.

JONAH will be a piece of the Justice Mission Team focus. JONAH is an organization of congregations seeking God's power to change our society in keeping with God's values. The founding churches understand and accept that we are all bound together through our mutual respect and belief in God's power and grace, to effect change in the Battle Creek community. In cooperation with I.S.A.A.C. in Kalamazoo, MI*Voice on state-wide issues, and with the Gamaliel Foundation at the national level, it is the vision of JONAH that our actions will bring about positive change - shared abundance, sacred community, unrelenting hope, equal opportunity and justice - through the political and economic systems in our life.

Through the JONAH listening campaign in the spring of 2006, members of First Congregational Church had an opportunity to express their concerns and hopes for a better Battle Creek community. Three task forces were formed from the information received from all the churches participating in the listening campaign: Youth and Family, Structural Racism, and Economy Task Force. Members from First Congregational Church are involved in these task forces.
