Worship Style

Our worship liturgy is grounded in congregational participation - "liturgy" literally means "the work of the people". Accordingly, the worship bulletin includes all the hymns, along with both spoken and sung congregational responses so that all may participate. If you are new to our worship service, you will find our bulletin to be very visitor-friendly. We want you to feel at home and participate fully!

Worship services include singing, litanies, prayers, and scripture reading. Anthems by one of our many choirs or liturgical dance are also included. Our pastors' sermons have a reputation for being stimulating and challenging to the intellect and spirit. The choir and ministers wear robes. There is an opening processional with children who bring in the elements for worship, including a small child who brings in the Christ candle and recites a Call to Worship, inviting the congregation to prepare for worship. Within this framework of congregational tradition, we strive for a relaxed feeling throughout the service which connects each of us to God in that sacred space.

The hymns for our worship services are copied (with permission) from hymnals of the congregational and reformed traditions and placed in our weekly worship bulletin. They are carefully selected to correlate to the scriptures for the service and include both traditional and recent hymns. Sung congregational responses are printed in the worship bulletin. Music sung by the choirs correlates to the scripture readings and encompasses a wide variety of styles and genres. Preludes for the organ are intended to prepare the congregation for worship; the Postlude is usually festive. First Congregational Church - UCC - Worship Style
