MusicFirst Congregational Church offers a wide range of opportunities for active participation in music and worship through a children's choir, two handbell choirs, a contemporary instrumental ensemble, and a chancel choir. These groups primarily focus upon enriching our worship through preludes, anthems, and solos. The two excellent pipe organs provide most of the music for worship and supports congregation in singing. There are also many opportunities to attend various types of concerts and recitals at the church. Whether you participate in one of our musical groups, attend a church concert, or join in singing the great hymns during worship, we invite you to experience the joy of music in a Christian environment.| Chancel Choir | Handbells | Church School Choir | "I, Too" Choir | Organs |
Chancel Choir The Chancel Choir provides a high quality of choral music for all worship services. It has a membership of 30 singers encompassing a wide background of music talent that ranges from instrumental and piano study, choral experience in high school or college, to advanced vocal training. The choir sings a variety of music that includes everything from early music to the present day, spirituals, cantatas, and classics of sacred choral repertoire. Membership is open to all who have musical backgrounds and are capable of reading music. New members are always welcome; and yes, we have a place for you. The Chancel Choir is directed by Dr. Albert Bolitho, 969-9772 Handbells The church has two handbell choirs. The Plymouth Handbell Choir encompasses ages from high school to adult. It plays monthly for church worship and rehearses on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This handbell choir requires ability to read music and a commitment to attend rehearsal regularly. For information, call Dr. Albert Bolitho, 969-9772. The Dayspring Ringers is open to anyone with a basic knowledge of reading music who is interested in playing handbells. This group rehearses Tuesday mornings mid-September to mid-May. Dayspring Ringers play a wide variety of musical selections, and perform numerous times each year for various groups, including nursing homes. Interested? Call Fran Isaac 965-5081. Church School Choir (2006-2007 Schedule) The Church School Choir is composed of the Sunday morning church school kids in first - seventh grades. As they are excused from worship in the Sanctuary, at about 10:20, they enter the Miller Chapel and sing there each Sunday to learn songs of faith and praise. About every month, they participate in worship to share a song from their unit of learning. On the Sunday they perform, there is a rehearsal at 9:30. Occasionally, a grade will stay in the chapel to work more intensively on learning the songs, as part of the Rotation Model. Staff member Lucy Lower is the Church School Choir Director. "I, Too" Choir The "I, Too" Choir is named after our church slogan "I, Too, Minister Here". It welcomes musicians of any age from sixth grade and above. It has included instrumentalists of many sorts, and is always open to anyone willing to join in. They mostly provide more contemporary music during worship, and often lead the congregation in songs of praise during the Sunday morning service Preludes. I, Too rehearsals are in the Signature Room on Sundays, from 11:15 - 12:00 noon, beginning several weeks before the scheduled date to sing in worship. On the Sunday they perform, rehearsal starts at 9:15 a.m. Staff member Lucy Lower is the "I, Too" Choir Director. Organs The church has two outstanding pipe organs. The sanctuary's superb Martin Ott pipe organ was completed in the year 2000 and is capable of playing all types of organ literature. It enhances worship by providing a sturdy support for congregational singing, quiet timbres for meditation, brilliant sounds for festive occasions, and colorful accompaniments for choirs and soloists. The arches and colors of the organ façade correlate with the rest of the sanctuary. The organ in Miller Chapel was built by Lynn Dobson of Lake City, Iowa in 1989. It is ideally suited to the size of the chapel. The church is fortunate to have excellent acoustics in both the sanctuary and Miller Chapel. Top of Page
