Fall 2023 Wisdom School - Become as I Am: Living with the Gospel of Thomas

BECOME AS I AM: Living with the Gospel of Thomas

This fall in Wisdom School, we'll be exploring The Gospel of Thomas. This collection of Jesus’ subtle, challenging, and revolutionary sayings reveal him as his earliest students encountered him: a living master of conscious transformation.

Once thought to be lost, this collection of 114 Wisdom sayings attributed to Jesus was rediscovered in 1945. Unsurprisingly, scholars and preachers panned it as heretical, a late ‘gnostic’ forgery, or just plain confusing. Now, contemporary scholarship has shown the Gospel of Thomas to be at least as old as the canonical gospels, and much closer to the heart of Jesus’ teaching than we initially thought.

“As you listen to this gospel in its entirety,” says Episcopal priest & spiritual teacher Cynthia Bourgeault, “and allow its paradoxical sayings to slowly sink in, you realize that you are actually gaining a much more complete take on Jesus; you see more clearly where he is coming from—and headed toward.”

On Wednesday nights at 6:00PM beginning on September 20th through November 8th, join us as we gather to explore Jesus’ sayings from the Gospel of Thomas. As we chant, discuss, and celebrate contemplative communion, we’ll experience firsthand how these sayings, when we work them out in our everyday lives, can open our hearts more deeply to the presence of the Divine within and all around us, and awaken us to the transformative power of self-emptying love.

Meetings will be in person with a Zoom attendance option.

Cereal City Wisdom School at FCCBC offers courses on consciousness, cosmology, and contemplative spirituality to help us wake up for the work that faces us today. These sessions are interfaith and recognize the streams of practical ancient wisdom that have been carried into the present by our ancestors of all faith traditions.
